Frankenstein
Big Finish Classics
Frankenstein’s monster is one of those things that seems to have always been around, lampooned and retold in so many different ways, that we know more about the fame than the original creation. I remember the Frankenstein Unbound film in the early 90’s with John Hurt. I do have a copy of the novel, though I’m not sure if I’ve actually read it or that its been so long since I did. As with the Invisible man last year, with this on sale its a chance to catch up on a classic.
This stars Arthur Danville as Victor and Nick Briggs as the monster, you’ll be familiar with the other names in the cast but these two do the bulk of the work. Its comprised of three hour long episodes.
A ship trying to find a passage between the ice rescues a man - Victor Frankenstein who tells a strange tale. Destined to be a Doctor he leaves his home and the woman he is due to marry for university. There he meets a likeminded man and together they set upon task to create a new human. Made from salvaged body parts the ‘monster’ is given life, but his creator is horrified and the two spend their time in hatred of each other.
The story takes place over a number of years, and from what I can tell doesn’t skip over the bits that other productions do. It is more about Victor than the monster, its his tale we’re learning. Though we do get to hear of the monsters side of things.
What I found interesting is Victor, though he seems a normal, reasonable man, there is a evil, callous side to him. While he is revulsed at his creation, he’s cold and oblivious to the feelings of others. He just doesn’t care.
This kept me engaged throughout the three hours, and unusually for me, I listened in one go - I had a long train journey. I have little to compare it to, without going back to the book or seeking out film versions. But I quite enjoyed it and definitely recommend listening.
