The Dalek Occupation Of Winter
Doctor Who The Early Adventures 5.1
I was looking for something with a festive feel, with winter in the title and having bought this a while ago it seemed like an obvious choice. Its a terrific story - didn’t evoke the cold time of year I’d hope it would, but it more than made up for it.
The Doctor, Steven and Vicky arrive on the planet of Winter, all would seem to be well. Happy people, the latest batch to excel in their fields have graduated and are to be sent to the research centre, never to be seen again - a slightly worrying aspect. What’s more concerning is finding out the Daleks are there; appearing to be friendly and working with the people of Winter.
Much like the Power of the Daleks or Victory Of The Daleks, this is a similar theme. We know the Daleks are evil and are hiding the fact, but what’s their plan? It does take until episode 4 for the truth to be uncovered, though you’re able to piece the information together from what’s been revealed to get the general idea.
I do complain about stories ending up being the usual runabout, I never got that with this. The plot moved forward and I was genuinely interested, a lot to do with the truth behind what happening on Winter.
Steven is spilt up early on and becomes a worker assembling Daleks casings. On Winter you have to work, they make Daleks and the Daleks provide fish fruit and Vegetables. Of course no one believes the Daleks are evil.
Though the Tardis team are split up and happen to meet up by chance I can forgive it as it works well. Vicky has her own troubles to deal with. The Doctor has a slightly reduced part in the proceedings but I’m Ok with that.
Robert Daws acts in this. I recognised the voice but still had to look up before I realised who it was. Not that famous in Doctor Who circles but I’ve enjoyed his performances in other TV series.
