Deception
Gallifrey Time war 4.1
As with most series like these, you really need to remember what was happening at the end of the last series (or like me go and look it up on the internet), as this follows directly on from last time.
In case you’re wondering: With Rassilon being resurrected, Romana and Narvin had left Gallifrey and had tracked Leela to the planet Unity. Leela herself living with a woman and her son Rayo. With the Daleks arriving, Romana says goodbye to Leela and Narvin as they leave, and Romana chooses to use a chameleon arch to hide her identity.
In this episode Narvin, Leela and Rayo head to Nisteria - a resistance group against both the Daleks and Timelords. However the shields are compromised and they have to evacuate and Leela is split from the others.
The real idea of this audio is the deception field, Leela on board a TARDIS with Eris and unable to pilot the TARIDS means she has to venture out into the field. It reminds me of the Nexus from Star Trek: Generations. It makes you question reality, you’re not sure what’s real and what isn’t, and is virtually impossible to get out of. Except our heroes - Leela, does, quite easily.
To be honest I didn’t follow this that well, first I should have caught up on what was happing before I started it. But there were also times when the effects put on voices to demonstrate the deception field made it hard to work out what was occurring.
The audio was also punctuated by events on Gallifrey, mostly Rassilon’s speeches and Livias reactions. But I was more interested in Leela’s struggle and found it was more distracting than anything else. The Gallifrey series does have a tendency to go off on tangents, following different characters, on and off Gallifrey. But it felt a little disconnected, a little like two different stories going on at once, though they are linked.
There is mention of the Untempered schism, which does help to bring the classic series and modern series of Doctor Who together.
I should probably give this another go, and concentrate more than I did. Its not bad but the deception field should have been explored more, and there should have been more of an effort for Leela to overcome it.
